The Knowledge Exchange in Laser Engineering
project aims to enable North West
companies to benefit from the potential advantages that laser
technology offers across a broad range of sectors including
Aerospace, Biomedical, Energy, Automotive, Manufacturing and
Consumer Goods.
Objectives:
Key activities:
The KE-LAS project team, with proven experience
in Knowledge Exchange for development of
business opportunities with industry, will
engage with SMEs in targeted actions to help
implement and exploit laser R&D knowledge
collaboratively. Laser applications specialists
will support applications development activity
required to demonstrate feasibility of the
initiatives proposed with selected companies.
Expertise / Capability
-
Enhanced throughput precision
micromachining: rapid, flexible, dynamic and
precise control of ablative material removal;
low thermal material effects.
-
Enhanced welding processes:
low distortion, low heat affected zone, narrow
weld.
-
Enhanced material/surface
properties and performance: scratch resistance,
improved
-
self-cleaning, wear
resistance, corrosion resistance, increased
fatigue life, increased cell adhesion.
-
Enhanced drilling processes:
faster, micro holes, angled holes, reduced
tooling cost, chemical free.

Project Funding
The European Union has part financed the
Knowledge Exchange in Laser Engineering (KE-LAS) project through
the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) administered in
the region by the Northwest Regional Development Agency.
Distributed by the European Commission, the ERDF promotes
growth, competitiveness and employment in the region. Investment
in innovation, enterprise and stronger support for business
start-ups are the cornerstones of the North West’s ERDF
programme up to 2013.
